Jio fibre will expand market for everyone

Reliance Industries has proposed to bring optical fibre to the home in 1,100 towns. This is good news that promises to unleash(शुरू करना/खोलना) new creativity(रचनात्मकता) across urban India, creating(बनाना) new businesses, enhancing(सुधारना/उठाना) the quality and quantity of education and healthcare, and creating new possibilities(संभव/संभावना) in entertainment. At the same time, such a massive(बड़ा/व्यापक) expansion of operations by one single connectivity(संयोजकता) provider(प्रदान करनेवाला) would call for strict(कठोर/सख़्त) monitoring(निगरानी/जांच) and enforcement of regulatory norms, to prevent(प्रतिबंध करना/निवारण करना) abuse of monopoly(एकाधिकार) and, in particular, safeguard(बचाव/ज़मानत) net neutrality(निष्पक्षता/अपक्षपात). A provider of connectivity should not privilege(विशेषाधिकार/ सुविधा) any content or degrade(नीचा दिखाना) access to any (प्रतिद्वंद्वी होना) content. If this is ensured(यह सुनिश्चित किया/पक्का कर लेना,), content creators of all kinds stand to gain from the spread(फैलाव/विस्तार) of fixed-line broadband.

India has nearly 8,000 towns, according to the 2011Census. But only 468 of them have a population exceeding(से अधिक/अत्यधिक) one lakh, and these account for 70% of the total urban population. India is poised for a leap(उछाल)) in urbanisation(शहरीकरण) , however. As economic growth accelerates(गति बढ़ाना), more jobs will be created in industry and services, which take place in urban environs(माहौल), than in agriculture(कृषि). This is the inexorable(अनौपचारिक/ logic(तर्क) of urbanisation. Modern urbanisation will depend on high-speed data connectivity, for machine-to-machine traffic and for human-to-machine and human-to-human communications. While the last-mile delivery of data would depend on wireless technologies, backhaul connectivity has to be provided by fibre. For a company that has already laid optical fibre trunk routes across(सभी जगह) the country, it makes sense to fully utilise(का उपयोग करता है) that infrastructure by laying(अविशेषज्ञता) networks in towns along the trunk routes. Municipal bodies would do well to offer easy right of way, to make their cities fully connected, instead(बजाय/जगह में) of seeing right of way as a means of extracting rent from telcos. All optical fibre, save that of defence, should run on open access principles.

Reliance promises to integrate(संघटित/एकीकृत) its physical retail with a new online retail business. Its main advantage(फायदा/अनुकूल परिस्थिति) would be freedom from the restrictions(प्रतिबंध रोक) on foreign investors in retail. The sector needs a level playing field.
