Crisis as opportunity: on Sonia Gandhi’s return as Congress chief

Bharatiya Janata Party
Indian National Congress
The Nehru-Gandhi dynasty must withdraw without leaving a vacuum in the Congress
Sonia Gandhi’s return as the Congress party president — an interim(अंतरिम ) measure(उपाय), apparently(जाहिरा तौर पर) — ends the leadership vacuum (शून्यता ख़ालीपन)since the party’s massive(भारी ) defeat(हार) in the 17th Lok Sabha election, but only superficially(ऊपर-ऊपर से।). When Rahul Gandhi succeeded her in 2017, Ms. Gandhi had held the post for 19 years, the longest tenure(कार्यकाल) for anyone in the party’s 134-year history. Despite(बावजूद) a spirited(उत्साही/तीव्र ) poll(मतदान ) campaign(अभियान), Mr. Gandhi could not reverse(उलटा) the fortunes(भाग्य/तक़दीर) of the party that had already been in a free-fall. In what some of his party leaders thought was an impetuous(अभेद्य ) decision(निर्णय), he resigned (इस्तीफा दे दिया)as the party president, after the Lok Sabha defeat, pushing(बढ़ाया) the organisation(संगठन ) into a tailspin. While the collapse(गिरावट) of the party was on his watch, its vitals had been corroded in the years before he took over. While holding that post for nearly two decades(दशकों) was unwise(नासमझ ), the cardinal failure(असफलता) of Ms. Gandhi’s leadership was in not preparing(तैयार करना) the ground for a transition, even if it were to be within the family. Mr. Gandhi who was to take over as party president, did not join the government, undermining his credibility(विश्वसनीयता ) as a Prime Ministerial aspirant(आकांक्षी). While Ms. Gandhi allowed politics to be reduced(कम किया हुआ) to intrigues(साज़िश) in her durbar, Mr. Gandhi spent his time on misjudged(गलत ) priorities(प्राथमिकताएं) such as revamping(सुधारना) the student and youth wings of the party.

In her second coming as party chief, Ms. Gandhi must use her authority(अधिकार) to not only pave the way for a smooth transition of leadership but also ensure(सुनिश्चित/पक्का करना) that the role of the family in the party is reimagined. It is true that in the absence(अनुपस्थिति/अभाव) of any coherent(स्पष्ट/सुसंगत) unifying(एकीकृत) thought(चिंता/विचार) — as evidenced(साबित करना/बेदखल) in the squabble(तकरार/झगड़ा) among its leaders over the Centre’s decision to unilaterally(एकतरफा ) change the constitutional status of J&K — the family has been the glue that held the Congress together. However, what used to be the best solution for all crises in the Congress — the surname — is itself a crisis(संकट) for the party, in the current political climate(वातावरण). The focused attack on the Nehru-Gandhi legacy by the advancing Hindutva troops has contributed(योगदान) to the diminishing(कम होना) influence(प्रभाव ) of the family, but the fact is also that an increasing(बढ़ना) number of people abhor(घृणा करना) dynasty(वंश) politics and the privileges(विशेषाधिकार) associated(जुड़े) with it. Ms. Gandhi has an opportunity(अवसर), nay a responsibility(ज़िम्मेदारी), to proactively(पूरी सक्रियता) help the old guard and the younger generation within the Congress to reconcile(सुलझाएं) their differences(मतभेदों ) and devise a “common purpose(सामान्य उद्देश्य) of existence(अस्तित्व/मौजूदगी). At the helm of the party yet again, Ms. Gandhi must now focus on ending the centrality of the family in Congress, in a thoughtful(विचारशील ) manner(तौर तरीका/ढंग).b
