As the BJP found out, hyper nationalism has its limits in Assembly polls
The alliance(गठबंधन) of the BJP and the Shiv Sena retained( बरकरार रखी) power(सत्ता ) in Maharashtra and the BJP emerged( उदय हुआ) as the single largest party in Haryana, substantially(काफी ) beating anti-incumbency(विरोधी लहर) in both States, but also falling short of their claims(दावे) and rhetoric(वक्रपटुता/अलंकार शास्र) . In Haryana, the BJP will require(आवश्यकता ) the support of at least six MLAs outside its fold for a majority(बहुमत/बहुसंख्य) . The Opposition(विरोध ), despite(बावजूद) their sluggish(सुस्त ) campaign(अभियान) and scattered(बिखरी हुई ) thinking(सोच), exceeded( अधिक होना/बढ़ना) expectation(अपेक्षा ) in both States. Results of by-elections in 51 Assembly seats and two Lok Sabha constituencies(निर्वाचन क्षेत्रों) across 18 States were also announced on Thursday. Drawing(आकर्षित करना/रेखा-चित्र) any political trend(प्रवृत्ति ) lines based on these outcomes would be premature(समय से पहले), but certain(निश्चित) pointers are noteworthy. The BJP had front-loaded its campaign with nationalist topics such as the status of Kashmir and the National Register of Citizens, deliberately(जानबूझकर/सावधानी से) avoiding(बचना) any serious discussion (चर्चा)on the economy and livelihood (आजीविका )issues(मुद्दे). It is possible that the BJP and allies(सहयोगी ) got what they got because of this campaign, but these issues did not evidently(निस्संदेह/ज़रूर) overwhelm other voter concerns such as unemployment and farm crisis(संकट). The BJP and the Sena are winners, but tamed and curtailed compared to the Assembly results of 2014 and the Lok Sabha election earlier this year. The rout of many turncoats from other parties that the BJP had recruited(भर्ती हुआ) recently is an evident(स्पष्ट ) expression(अभिव्यक्ति) of public disapproval(अस्वीकृति) of such tactics(रणनीति/युक्ति ). The results also indicate(संकेत मिलता है) that the BJP’s current arsenal is more effective(प्रभावी) in national elections. The results from Tamil Nadu where the AIADMK did well and Kerala where the Left appeared(दिखाई दिया) to regain some lost ground are also indicative(सूचक) of the differentiation(भेदभाव) that the voters tend to make between Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The Haryana Governor must now ensure(सुनिश्चित) that the formation(गठन/निर्माण) of a new coalition(गठबंधन ) government is transparent as there could be attempts(प्रयास ) to influence(प्रभावित ) legislators(विधायकों ) and parties.

The Congress-NCP alliance in Maharashtra improved its tally considerably(बड़े पैमाने पर /काफी) and in Haryana, the Congress doubled its 2014 tally. In Haryana, the Jannayak Janta Party (JJP) emerged (उभरा)as a formidable(विकट/भयंकर) regional (क्षेत्रीय )outfit(संगठन). These are indicators(संकेतक) of a yearning among the electorate for an alternative(विकल्प ) to the BJP that has amassed(धावा बोला/संकलित )political power but also alienated(अलग कर दिया/अलग-थलग) many social groups. That this growth of the Opposition has happened despite(अनुपस्थिति ) the absence(अनुपस्थिति ) of any coherence (अनुकूल होना/जुटना)or coordination(समन्वय/तुक) at the top is remarkable. Faced with brazen(निर्लज) harassment(उत्पीड़न) by state agencies, and dispirited (मायूस/उदास)by serial electoral setbacks(झटका), the Opposition had become lifeless(निर्जीव/बेजान ) but these results indicate that prospects (संभावनाएं)of an alternative are not entirely dark, particularly(विशेष रूप से ) when it comes to State polls. The BJP might be tempted(परीक्षा/प्रलोभन देना) to intensify(तीव्र बनाना) its hyper-nationalist agenda to boost its performance, while the Opposition might slip back into a comatose state, counting inaction(निष्क्रियता) itself as a strategy(रणनीति). . Both would be disastrous(संकटपूर्ण/प्रलयंकर), for the respective(संबंधित ) camps(शिविर) and the country.
