Raghuram Rajan joins IMF chief’s external advisory group

IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva named former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan and 11 others to her external advisory group to provide perspectives from around the globe on key developments and policy issues, including responses to the exceptional challenges the world now faces due to the coronavirus pandemic. Rajan, 57, who was the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor for three years until September 2016, is currently working as a professor at the prestigious University of Chicago.

Georgieva said that even before the spread of COVID-19 and the dramatic health, economic and financial disruptions it has brought, International Monetary Fund (IMF) members confronted a rapidly evolving world and complex policy issues. To serve our membership well in this context, we need top-notch input and expertise from the widest range of sources, inside and outside the Fund, she said.

Other members of the group are Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Senior Minister of Singapore and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore; Kristin Forbes, Professor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology; Kevin Rudd, former Prime Minister of Australia; Lord Mark Malloch Brown, former UN deputy secretary-general among others.

IMF प्रमुख के बाह्य सलाहकार समूह में शामिल हुए रघुराम राजन

रिजर्व बैंक के पूर्व गवर्नर रघुराम राजन को अंतरराष्ट्रीय मुद्राकोष की प्रमुख क्रिस्टालिना जॉर्जीवा के बाहरी सलाहकार समूह का सदस्य बनाया गया है। राजन तथा 11 अन्य अर्थशास्त्रियों को बाहरी सलाहकार समूह का सदस्य बनाया गया है। ये सलाहकार कोरोना वायरस महामारी के कारण उत्पन्न संकट को लेकर उठाये जाने वाले कदमों समेत दुनिया भर में हो रहे बदलाव तथा नीतिगत मुद्दों पर अपनी राय आईएमएफ प्रमुख को देंगे।

राजन सितंबर 2016 तक तीन साल तक भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक के गवर्नर रह चुके हैं। वह अभी शिकागो विश्वविद्यालय में प्रोफेसर हैं। जॉर्जीवा ने कहा कि कोरोना वायरस महामारी के कारण सामने आयी चुनौतियों से पहले ही उसके सदस्य देश तेजी से बदलती दुनिया तथा जटिल नीतिगत मुद्दों का सामना कर रहे थे। उन्होंने कहा कि इन संदर्भां में सदस्यों की अच्छी सेवा करने के लिये हमें आईएमएफ के अंदरूनी स्रोतों के साथ ही बाहरी स्रोतों से भी गुणवत्तायुक्त राय व विशेषज्ञता की जरूरत है। मुझे खुशी है कि इस दिशा में सेवा प्रदान करने के लिये उच्च नीतिगत अनुभव वाले लोगों से लेकर बाजार व निजी क्षेत्र के विशेषज्ञ सहमत हुए हैं।

इस समूह में शामिल किये गये अन्य सदस्यों में सिंगापुर के वरिष्ठ मंत्री व सिंगापुर के मौद्रिक प्राधिकरण के चेयरमैन तारमण षणमुगरत्नम, मैसचुएट्स इंस्टीट्यूट ऑफ टेक्नोलॉजी की प्रोफेसर क्रिस्टीन फोर्ब्स, आस्ट्रेलिया के पूर्व प्रधानमंत्री केविन रुड, संयुक्तराष्ट्र के पूर्व डिप्टी महासचिव लॉर्ड मार्क मलोक ब्राउन भी शामिल हैं।
